How to clean lipstick from carpet

Panic often sets in when lipstick is dropped and smears all over the carpet. A common misconception is that nothing will remove a lipstick stain. This is not true if you follow Dave’s easy steps.

To remove lipstick from carpet:
  1. Pre-treat the stain with a spot-stain remover, laundry pre-soak or a citrus based cleaner.
  2. Leave for ten minutes to allow the remover to start working into the stain.
  3. Using the citrus-based cleaner and a clean rag gently blot the stain. Rub gently using a circular motion, without spreading the stain further and pushing fibres downwards.
  4. Use different sections of the rag when the area you are using becomes too dirty by turning the rag.
  5. If the stain is stubborn, sponge with equal quantities of methylated spirits and household ammonia. (test  on coloured fabrics first)
  6.  If colour fades, reduce the ammonia by half and test again.
  7.  Blot dry with clean rug.

Dave’s Tip:
With lipstick, as with many other oily based stain, always clean towards the centre of the stain. Never rub as this will spread the stain.
