Soot and smoke stains occur in a wide variety of manners. Since smoke contains carbon the carbon will easily stick to surfaces such as walls and ceilings forming a smoke soot stain that is challenging to remove. It may be charred, scorched or smeared on your carpet. It may have been brought in from outside with foot traffic or someone may have dropped a charred piece of firewood. It may even be a small sprinkle of ash near your fireplace or a greasy mark on your wall. Whichever the case, one thing is always the same with soot and smoke stains and that is the smoky odour it will leave behind.
To remove a soot stain from carpet:
1. Place a cloth or tarp around the surrounding areas to protect the unaffected carpet since soot can easily spread.
2. Vacuum the area using the brush attachment of your vacuum which will gather up any lose soot in the area. The force of the vacuum may also begin to loosen the soot elements embedded in the carpet.
3. Using a dry sponge made from rubber, remove the remaining soot. With soft, but firm movements the soot will slowly release towards the surface and absorb into the sponge.
Dave’s Tip:
Don’t try and clean soot with water it will create an absolute diabolical mess. The best way to remove soot from carpet is by using a dry method.
