How to clean tobacco and cigarette stains from carpet

Apart from the obvious health concerns, a good reason to stop smoking inside is to prevent tobacco stains on the carpet. Tobacco stains are hard to remove and show a deep brown coloured stain on carpet. They also leave a smoky smell in the carpet which lingers and is often hard to eliminate. The good news is, however, tobacco stains can be removed without the aid of professional assistance.

To remove tobacco and cigarette stains from carpet:

1. Put on rubber gloves and saturate a clean, cotton cloth with dry-cleaning solvent.
2. Apply the saturated cloth directly onto the tobacco stain.
3. Continue to blot clean the tobacco stain until all the dry-cleaning solvent has been absorbed.

4. You may need to change cloths each time your cloth becomes too dirty.
5. Continue to blot and apply pressure on the tobacco stain until the tobacco stain no longer transfers onto the cloth(s).
6. Sponge the area with a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
7. Dip a clean cloth into this solution and then apply it to the tobacco stain starting from the edge of the stain and working your way into the middle.
8. Once the stain has lifted, apply cold water to the area with a clean cloth.
9. Finally, blot your carpet dry to remove all the water.

Dave’s Tip:

When blotting stains always push any residue towards the centre of the stain. Do not rub the area in a brushing motion as this can spread the stain
